    About

Martha Kaufman hails from the samall town of Sylacauga, Alabama. She grew up in a creative family- her mother was a accomplished seamstress, her father a master basket weaver, and her sister a well-known fabric artist now living in the Seattle area.

At Auburn, Martha studied graphic design as an undergraduate before changing her focusto psychology and community mental health as a graduate student. While attending Auburn in the early 70's, she apprenticed with a talented leather carver who ran a small shop within a "head shop" common in that era. She eventually took over that shop as she continued to progress- making custom leather designs. Martha's passion for using leather as a vehicle for graphic art has only increased since. She has had her work featured in art galleries and craft shops in several states.

Over the past few years, Martha began broadening her work to include multi-media metal wall hangings, paintings on mirriors, collage on canvas, as well as expanding leather carving and dying methods. She is expecially fond of the graphics of the Art Deco period and in a children's book during the GoldenAge of Illistration. Martha enjoys creating layers of discovery in her work- a 'firstglance' picture with embedded smaller items/ pictures that can be seen with closer examination...some of these include use of family artificats like her children's early school art, her mother's thimbles or father's tiny woven baskets.....some use of unexpected vehicle to create an artistic prersence, such as her Lady Heads, created from Styrofoam mannequin heads.

Martha enjoys making every piece different and unique, rarely using a design twice. She wants viewers to be drawn in to take a look, and keep looking as more details are discovered. She lives in Durham and is a strong supporter of local businesses on 9th Street, businesses that strive to keep the crreative, diverse spirit of Durham alive and well.
